105.3 KLGH begins simulcasting 640 WWLS

Citadel Broadcasting’s “The Sports Animal” (WWLS 640) began to simulcast its Sports-Talk format on KLGH 105.3. The station’s current FM simulcast, WWLS-FM 104.9, while still simulcasting WWLS at the moment, would flip to country a few days later. Though the dial position of the FM simulcast is changing, the station continues to broadcast on WWLS 640. Until this week, KLGH was a Contemporary Christian station. Citadel had agreed to purchase the it from Kingfisher County Broadcasting for $3.1 million. KLGH’s metro coverage is significantly less than that of WWLS-FM, as the 105.3 signal only reaches the northwestern suburbs of Oklahoma City. This signal, however, fills a hole in WWLS 640’s directional antenna pattern that WWLS-FM could not. Listeners in dow...

550 KGME Becomes NewsRadio 550 KFYI

Previous Format: Sports “SportsRadio 550” KGME New Format: News/Talk “NewsRadio 550” KFYI Date & Time Of Change: September 25, 2000 More Info: Wikipedia As part of the historic merger between Clear Channel and AMFM, Clear Channel elected to keep both KGME 550 (Sports) and KFYI 910 (News/Talk) as part of its AM portfolio in Phoenix. On September 25, 2000, KFYI moved from its longtime home at 910 to Arizona’s best AM signal, 550. KGME, which had moved from 1360 to 550 only about 16 months earlier, found itself at 910. KFYI changed its moniker from “Talk Radio 910, KFYI” to “News Radio 550, KFYI” — a name that sounded very much like its longtime competitor and now neighbor: Emmis-owned News/Talk/Sports-formatted “News Radi...

810 WHB flips to All-Sports, assuming the programming of 1510 KCTE

As the country field in the market became larger, WHB (which, after 77 years on the 710 frequency, moved to 810 in 1997) had a tough time competing (see the earlier WHB flip, above, for details.) Also, a void existed for a full-market sports station. On October 2, 1999, WHB ended its longtime country format for Sports.

660 WNBC Bids Farewell

In 1988 General Electric purchased RCA and with it NBC. Due to FCC ownership fules at the time, GE could only keep either the NBC Television stations or its Radio stations. Obviously the radio stations were the ones to go. Emmis Broadcasting, which owned 1050 WFAN and 103.5 WQHT saw this as a perfect opportunity to upgrade the signals of its New York outlets and triggered one of the most complex frequency swaps in radio history. WFAN moved from 1050 to 660, WUKQ debuted on 1050 with a non-commercial Spanish format, but only until Spanish Broadcasting could complete the swap for 97.9 WEVD, while 97.1 WYNY and 103.5 WQHT swapped as well. In the end, this deal was most important for the demise of WNBC and NBC Radio in general. What was once the flagship station of the biggest network in Ameri...

1050 WHN flips from Country to All-Sports WFAN

Previous Format: Country WHN New Format: Sports WFAN Date & Time Of Change: July 1, 1987 at 3:00pm More Info: Wikipedia Jeff Smulyan had an idea. What if you could recreate barroom discussion of sports on a 24 hour radio station. Lucky for Jeff, he happened to be the President of Emmis Broadcasting, which happened to have an AM outlet in New York that would be a perfect testing ground for the format. WHN had become a legend in the previous 15 years it had with the Country format, with many New York DJ’s that will go into any New York Radio Hall of Fame: Del Demontreaux, Lee Arnold, Dan Daniel, and Dan Taylor to name a few. Equipped with rights to the defending World Champion New York Mets, WFAN signed-on and without making much of a dent in the ratings it did make a name for its...
