96.5 The Mountain Chattanooga flips from AAA to CHR
With one of only four 100kw signals in the Chattanooga market, 96.5 WDOD-FM has always been looked upon as a potential sleeping giant. At the same time, the CHR format has never had a signal with the potential to be heard throughout the region. The format had not been heard at all in the area after Clear Channel flipped 98.1 WKXJ to Classic Country in June 2007. WDOD’s AAA format had evolved to a Modern Rock hybrid, but was a continual also ran. On March 3, 2008, WDOD brought CHR to its 100kw signal, while taking the path less taken nowadays by retaining “The Mountain” moniker and a few of the on-air staff. It’s not often that a station changes format to the exact thing it was before, but that is exactly what happened at midnight of August 1, 2003 in Knoxville, TN. In July, Citadel Communications announced it would LMA WOKI from its owner Dick Broadcasting and change its format when it took over. But two things happened which would prevent that from happening. The day after the announcement competitor Journal Broadcasting flipped 93.1 WMYU from Classic Hits to Hot AC, which they feared WOKI would have flipped to and compete against their CHR WWST “Star 102”. Citadel Communications has a lock on the country audience in Albuquerque until the summer of 2000, when Clear Channel debuted 107.9 KBQI. K-Bull and sister 92.3 KRST both lost significant market share to Big I 107.9. In late January 2001, K-Bull began removed its entire airstaff and began running promos after every song directing listeners to KRST. On Monday, Feburary 12, the station began stunting with all REM as KREM. This was followed by a days of U2, and Dave Matthews Band. During those three days sweepers by former KPEK morning team of Gene and Julie asked listeners what they would like to hear on “The New 103-3”.
