“Z104.9” WZMR flips from Modern AC to Smooth Jazz
WZMR was a fairly new station in the Albany market, having moved in from Johnstown (oldies WSRD) in March 1999 after a purchase by Albany Broadcasting. The station began as Modern AC “The Point”, but was forced to change the name to “Z104.9” on the request of Infinity Broadcasting (representing rival owner Tele-Media, which had the right to use the name in Albany; launching Modern AC WCPT that May). After WCPT’s launch, “Z104.9” failed part due to a poorer signal than WCPT, part due to a contract to carry New York Yankees baseball placed there prior to the format launch. 98.5 KHYS/103.3 KJOJ become “Kiss 98.5 & Kiss Again 103.3”
Over the years, for whatever reason, it seems like “pure” Rhythmic CHR has failed in Houston. The two most recent attempts to make the format work have been on limited signals. One of these attempts was “Kiss 98-5, Kiss Again 103-3” (KHYS/KJOJ), which replaced the previous NAC/Jazz format, on February 24, 1997. Kiss offered a Dance-oriented approach targetted at Latinos, similar to Power 96 in Miami. Styles of music heard on the station included house, freestyle, bass, tropical, and R&B. While the station seemed to be making some progress in the ratings early, it never got to the next level. Eagle 106 WEGX becomes Smooth Jazz WJJZ
In the early 1990’s CHRs across the country were flipping formats. Baltimore and Washington, D.C. had lost theirs in 1992. In 1993, Philadelphia would lose its. The 106.1 frequency had been CHR for almost a decade under a few monikers: WZGO Z106, WTRK Electric 106, and finally Eagle 106. Smooth Jazz formats were sprouting up across the nation, targeting a more desirable audience to advertisers. After the flip on Friday, March 12th, another station was quick to jump on WEGX’s audience. 100.3 WKSZ, a struggling AC flipped to CHR as Z100 the following Monday, but would later change calls to WPLY “Y100” after a lawsuit from New York’s Z100 fearing audience confusion due to signal overlap.
