KQCH moves from 97.7 to 94.1
WOW-AM & FM were one of the last pair of stations west of the Mississippi to retain not only call letters beginning with “W”, but also those which only contained 3 letters. When Journal Broadcast group acquired the pair of country stations they felt the baggage that came with Great Empire’s operation of WOW in recent years was heavier than the stacks of mail the station would no doubt receive. WOW-AM became KOMJ with an Adult Standards format. In October of 2000, (KSSO) 94 1 KISS Country was launched. The initial heavy promotion would soon be squelched by Clear Channel, who holds the trademark for the “Kiss” moniker and just happened to own the other country station in Omaha. “The House Party” relaunches as “Party 104.9”
Originally a CHR/Rhythmic specialty show on Tejano station “Puro Tejano 100.7”, “The House Party” became the fulltime format at 100.7 FM on March 1, 1999. Through a deal with El Dorado Communications, HBC moved the Spanish AC format of “K-Love 93.3 Y 104.9 FM” to the newly acquired city grade 106.5 FM in August of 2001. 104.9 FM (which was scheduled to upgrade to cover all Houston within a year) then became the home of “The House Party”. On February 21, 2002 Houston radio history was made as the 104.9 FM KPTY launched it’s new signal and new moniker “Party 104-9”.
93.1 KQIZ Relaunches as “93.1 The Beat”
The original KQIZ signed on in 1975 and pretty much remained Mainstream Top 40 for its entire tenure. As the summer of 2001 ended, KQIZ was in a format many have dubbed Lillith Fair FM. Over a period of several months, ratings had gone from upwards of a 19 share 12+ to a jaw dropping 3.2. Having paid over $3 million for the property, Cumulus Broadcasting was presumably not going to let the station slip away. On or around Monday, November 3, 2001, the station suddenly stopped with the CHR/Pop format. There was no announcement, no prologue, the station just suddenly switched to stunting. The entire staff, sans one person, were fired. About a week later (4 days before sign on), announcements aired proclaiming that “something brand new is coming to 93-1, details Thursday morning.”...

WMKJ becomes Wild 96.7
On August 11, 2000, Clear Channel flipped AC-formatted WMKJ “Magic 96” to “The New 96-7, Atlanta’s Party Station”, giving the Atlanta area an R&B and hip-hop-oriented Rhythmic CHR on a limited signal. The station announced that a new moniker would be coming soon. Eventually, a “Survivor”-type contest surfaced on the station’s Web site, in which one possible moniker for the station was “voted” off each day. This led up to the birth of “Wild 96-7” on September 8, 2000.
