August 10, 2006 will go down as one of the most historical days in Philadelphia radio history. At Noon, Clear Channel blew up the formats of two of their five FM stations simultaneously. While Sunny 104.5 was ditching its Gold based AC format, Smooth Jazz was disappearing from 106.1 after a successful 13 year run. The demise of WJJZ, which was made to create a format to support Whoopie Goldberg’s syndicated morning show. Following a euology of the station by Program Director Michael Tozzi, and Daryl Hall’s “She’s Gone” the Black Eyed Peas’ “Let’s Get It Started” kicked off “Philly’s 106.1” and its shadowcast at 104.5.

It was a long time coming. What was once one of the most revered rock stations in the country, 102.7 WNEW lost its way in the mid-1990’s. Constant musical shifts: AAA, Alternative, Classic Rock, Mainstream Rock, back to Classic Rock took their toll on the audience. Finally an answer was found as the station hired so called “shock jocks” Opie and Anthony for afternoons. Ratings rose in their daypart and eventually WNEW flipped to all talk, but could never fill in all the dayparts to the same level of success due to Howard Stern being heard on sister station 92.3 WXRK. Following the first-place-in-its-first book debut of New York’s Dance CHR WKTU (February 1996), it didn’t come as a surprise that a few stations across the country tried to clone the format in their own markets. KIBB (B-100) was one such station, and just like every other clone during that period, it failed miserably. KIBB began as a Rhythmic AC in the Fall of 1996, emphasizing 70’s and 80’s Dance/R&B selections and positioning itself with the slogan “LA’s Hot FM.” Several months later, Viacom sold the station to Chancellor (which became AMFM).
