“Fresh 102.7” Las Vegas Becomes “102.7 Now”

Top 40 radio in Las Vegas has usually revolved around CBS Radio’s 98.5 KLUC. There had been a few challengers to its throne, most recently Clear Channel’s 101.9 Kiss-FM and Wild 102 in the early 21st century. Beasley Broadcasting’s “Fresh 102.7” had been mired at the bottom of the market since its changeover from All 80’s “Star 102.7” in 2007. By flipping to CHR, the new “102.7 Now” is taking a bit out of CBS’ own playbook in Los Angeles and New York by going after the the CHR powerhouse as well as Urban KVEG “Hot 97.5” in an attempt to allow sister KKLZ to move closer to the top of the ratings in Las Vegas.

92.3 K-Rock becomes Now-FM

For much its life, WXRK “92.3 K-Rock” was synonymous with Howard Stern. Stern joined the station in 1986 and it was his flagship until he left for Sirius at the end of 2005. Outside of Stern, the station’s identity was always evolving. It started out as Classic Rock, shifted to Alternative, and later Active Rock before bouncing back and forth between all three until it flipped to Talk as “Free-FM” at the beginning of 2006. When the talk format didn’t pick up steam, the station reverted to the “K-Rock” brand in May 2007. Outside of Opie & Anthony in the mornings, the station continued to struggle in the ratings as the stations identity had been lost due to the constant musical shifts and its target audience’s usage of newer technolo...

“FM Talk 97.1” KLSX Los Angeles Becomes Amp Radio

There was no one reason that led to the demise of FM Talk on 97.1 KLSX Los Angeles after 13 years. The departure of Howard Stern to Sirius in 2005 led to the national “Free-FM” experiment bringing in a restructuring that brought in Adam Carolla. The PPM ratings system changed the way stations recorded listeners. But it was commercial radio’s attempt to save money that eventually led to the demise of the format. At 5:00pm on February 20, 2009 KLSX gave way to “Amp Radio”, a CHR presentation that had been airing on the HD2 signal of sister 93.1 KCBS-FM. Unlike most format changes in recent years, the staff of KLSX was given notice ahead of time and allowed to do farewell shows on their way out.

96.5 The Mountain Chattanooga flips from AAA to CHR

With one of only four 100kw signals in the Chattanooga market, 96.5 WDOD-FM has always been looked upon as a potential sleeping giant. At the same time, the CHR format has never had a signal with the potential to be heard throughout the region. The format had not been heard at all in the area after Clear Channel flipped 98.1 WKXJ to Classic Country in June 2007. WDOD’s AAA format had evolved to a Modern Rock hybrid, but was a continual also ran. On March 3, 2008, WDOD brought CHR to its 100kw signal, while taking the path less taken nowadays by retaining “The Mountain” moniker and a few of the on-air staff.
